Alert, robust, elegant, loyal, loving, and completely devoted to their families, these medium-sized working dogs make both outstanding companions and performance dogs. Often mistaken for a small Doberman Pinscher or a large Miniature Pinscher the German Pinscher is neither. It is, however, the foundation dog for both of those breeds and despite its name, it is more closely related to the Schnauzer than to other pinschers. In all manner Max embraces his German Pinscher heritage. Animated and completely engaging as well as utterly and fawningly devoted to his people, he will take over your heart in mere seconds of meeting him. Dont kid yourself though, he is also assertively self-possessed, and he will take over your home in mere seconds without firm, consistent leadership and established boundaries. Lively and athletic, intelligent and inquisitive, Max has lots of energy and stamina so he requires daily exercise, both mental challenges and physical activities. His needs will be met by combining long walks on a leash, interactive play sessions in a fenced yard, obedience training, and outings alongside family members. He will also enjoy running alongside a bicycle and/or make an excellent jogging companion. Max has a fairly strong prey drive and will chase small, fast-moving animals or animals deemed interesting when outdoors (hell do the deeming if allowed). So to keep him from running off in pursuit of small prey and to prevent any escape-artist tendencies, he will need a securely fenced yard to run and explore in. Exceptionally sweet-natured, sometimes comedic, always elegant, and extremely sensitive (particularly to tone), this busy canine is also still very young, and he must continue his training. Training him, however, isnt so difficult. Although strong-willed with a personality that tests limits, both his and yours, he is a smart and capable dog who is quick to learn and willing to please when he knows this is what is expected. This means he needs an experienced owner who is willing and able to provide him with the exercise, leadership, and structure he needs on a daily basis. Although a social and friendly dog who enjoys the company of other dogs, Maxs fast-moving, rough-and-tumble play-style can overwhelm, and even annoy older and less active dogs who dont appreciate his antics. Keeping him socialized, providing proper introductions, and monitoring play sessions with other dogs will prevent any serious problems from developing. As with all of our dogs, a meet-n-greet with any household pets will be required prior to adoption. Max is best suited for a home with an active lifestyle and without young children. Although a loving family companion, his perpetual motion, high-energy level and strong personality can overwhelm young children. For the owner looking for a placid dog, Max wont cut it. But for the owner willing to put the time and effort into keeping this resourceful and determined boy happy, healthy, and well-behaved, a home will be made complete with the addition of this sincere and wholeheartedly affectionate canine who loves his family beyond all else and who will meld himself into every facet of his family members lives.
