This little darling will need an owner with somewhat of a flexible schedule, as she would simply languish and become depressed if left on her own for extended periods of time. An undemanding canine when it comes to her exercise needs, Gem is an absolute couch-potato who will also need an owner willing to provide a bit of inspired coaxing to make sure she gets the daily physical activity she needs to stay fit and happy. As she is an intelligent canine who likes to perform tasks and accomplish new things (and quite proud of herself when she does so), she will need plenty of mental stimulation too. A quick learner who is extremely attentive to humans, responsive to direction, and eager to please when she knows what is expected of her, Gem is an outstanding companion for a responsible and caring family that wants to add a very obedient, loyal, and loving pack member. A mostly easy-going, easy-to-please canine whose confidence right now is somewhat fragile, Gem is best suited for a home with a moderately-calm, not-to-busy lifestyle and a structured environment with clearly established rules and boundaries which are consistently adhered to. A family with enough time and willing to provide plenty of guidance and follow-through, sound leadership, a little patience, and a lot of nurturing will go a long way to help her become a more confident dog and establish her place as a cherished family companion who knows she has finally found her forever home. Her new family should also expect to continue her training and socialization. Although social and friendly with dogs she is familiar with and pretty tolerant of dogs in general, a meet and greet with any housemate pets is a must prior to adoption. Note: MSPCA rescued Gem from the Monroe County Animal Control (MCAC). Although an anxious, overwhelmed, and distraught dog with zero confidence when we first met her at the facility, this little girl, in spite of needing medical attention for a severe gash on the back of her neck and systemic infection, immediately showed herself to be an extremely people-pleasing canine with a sweet and gentle nature.
